NRL Club Star Eli Katoa Ruled Out for Entire 2026 Season After Serious Head Injuries and Neurosurgery

Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa has been officially ruled out the entire 2026 NRL season as he focuses on rehabilitation at home in Victoria, following returning from a prolonged stay in New Zealand after undergoing a neurosurgical procedure.

What Happened

The 25-year-old athlete sustained three separate head injuries during a single afternoon while representing the Tongan national team in a international fixture against New Zealand. Subsequently, he experienced seizures while off the field, requiring emergency medical attention.

A medical operation to relieve a brain bleed left the player in the hospital and temporarily grounded back to Melbourne.

The club announced recently that the forward has finally returned home and is recovering, having also been briefly admitted to a Melbourne hospital.

“Eli’s health and wellbeing remain our top concern,” stated Storm CEO Justin Rodski. “It is great to have him back home and under the supervision of our medical staff and specialist physicians.”

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Rodski noted that the athlete is improving each day and is eager to pursuing his recovery from home.

However, the CEO confirmed that there is no set timeline for his return to health or a potential return to training.

“In consultation with our medical team and neurology experts, Katoa won't be back to practice during the preseason and won’t be available for the upcoming season,” Rodski declared. “There is a long road ahead in his recovery, and his primary goal will be on achieving complete wellness prior to contemplating any form of return to training.”

Rodski concluded by saying that Katoa is a highly valued and respected member of our team and club, and that the Storm family will rally around him and support him through his rehabilitation period.

League Investigation

The National Rugby League is wrapping up its inquiry into the circumstances that resulted in Katoa’s surgery.

The powerful forward, who was selected for the competition’s team of the year at the annual awards ceremony, appeared to suffer a head injury during the pregame routine for the international contest.

However, Katoa was cleared to participate in the match and endured two more head impacts before being substituted in the later stages.

His state worsened rapidly, and he needed medical oxygen beside the field before being removed from the field on a medicab.

The league has sought to tackle concerns around concussions in the game in recent seasons, introducing stricter enforcement on high tackles and expanding the mandatory recovery time for injured athletes.
